Police: Cell phone stop results in weapons charges

The following items were taken from Highland Park Police Department reports and press releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Weapons offense

•A car passenger was charged Nov. 30 with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon after Highland Park police stopped the driver for use of a cell phone while driving in the 1900 block of Skokie Valley Road. Police allege the passenger, Christopher Vasquez, 25, of the first block of West Clarendon Drive, Round Lake Beach, provided a false name. After police found a weapon in the vehicle, Vasquez was charged with multiple offenses. He has been charged with two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon for no concealed carry permit and no owner’s identification card; aggravated resisting a peace officer and obstructing justice. His next court date is Dec. 13. The driver, Geordan Smith, 25, of the 500 block of West Hawley Street, Mundelein, was charged with driving on a suspended license and use of a wireless phone while driving. He is due in court Jan. 24.

DUI

•Pedro Guerrero, 42, of the 3800 block of West Hirsch Street, Chicago, was charged Nov. 27 with driving under the influence, no valid driver’s license, improper lane usage and uninsured motor vehicle after he was stopped by police in the 1200 block of Central Avenue. He also was charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and obstructing identification. His court date is Jan. 12.

•Jorge Vasquez, 33, of the 600 block of Homewood Avenue, Highland Park, was charged Nov. 27 with driving under the influence after police responded to a report of an unresponsive person in a vehicle parked in the 700 block of Park Avenue West. His court date is Dec. 15.

•Francisco Ayala, 24, of the 400 block of Oakwood Avenue, Waukegan, was charged Dec. 3 with driving under the influence, speeding and improper lane usage after being stopped by police in the 2700 block of Skokie Valley Road. Ayala is due in court Jan. 5.

•Erik Pasillas, 32, of the 5300 block of South Campbell Avenue, Chicago, was charged Dec. 2 with driving under the influence and improper lane usage after police responded to a driving complaint near Half Day Road and Skokie Valley Road. His court date is Jan. 5.

Battery

•Lucrece Anderson, 34, of the 1200 block of Sunset Drive, Round Lake Beach, was charged Nov. 30 with battery after police responded to a physical dispute at a business in the 3300 block of Skokie Valley Road. Anderson is due in court Jan. 24.

Retail theft

•A business in the 2000 block of Skokie Valley Road reported Nov. 28 that two people entered the store, placed items in a basket and left without paying. The items were four Nest Home products, three doorbells, two home security systems and two Disney Circle products.

Vehicle theft

•A silver Mercedes E350 was reported stolen from a business parking lot in the 400 block of Skokie Valley Road on Nov. 29. Employees were warming up the vehicle for a customer when another person entered the passenger side, moved into the driver’s seat and drove out of the lot, according to the police report.

Burglary to vehicle

•A purse containing cash was stolen Dec. 1 from a black Nissan Armada parked in the 700 block of Central Avenue. The passenger side window was smashed.

Criminal damage to vehicle

•Police received a report Dec. 2 that key marks were found on a gray Lexus parked in the 2700 block of St. Johns Avenue, and the damage was believed to have occurred Nov. 26.
